The Grounded G1, the world's first fully customizable electric smart RV.
Grounded, an electric RV startup, has unveiled the world’s first fully customizable smart electric RV. The Grounded G1 is a state-of-the-art RV that aims to set a new standard for sustainable travel with class-leading layout customization, solar power, and zero emissions.
The G1 is built on Ford’s well-established E-Transit platform. Both the powertrain and the living systems of the G1 are fully powered by electricity, aided in part by 650-Watt solar capacity, thanks to solar panels built into the roof. Ford batteries allow the vehicle to utilize a nationwide network of battery chargers.
There’s a significant demand for RVs that are both sustainable and can provide a well-designed and comfortable living space. Grounded is the first company out of the gate with a vehicle that does not rely on fossil fuels.
Grounded was launched in 2022 by a group of ex-Tesla and SpaceX engineers. Grounded CEO Sam Shapiro is a technologist and entrepreneur who also worked as a Senior Software Engineer at SpaceX, where he wrote embedded software for Starlink hardware. Prior to SpaceX, he was at TripleLift and SpecialGuest.
“The Grounded G1 gives people the freedom and self-reliance to live, work, and explore anywhere, sustainably integrated with nature,” said Shapiro. “I started Grounded to redefine what’s possible in an industry rife with offerings that are both dated and out-of-reach.”
Baltic Birch is used throughout the interior of the G1.
The G1 features a variety of innovations. It is built with an assembly system using a library of components to enable a variety of layouts. The RV’s modular interior allows users to shape and define the space to meet individual needs. That can be a distinct advantage for consumers, given the cost and wait times of bespoke builds.
Sustainably-sourced Baltic Birch is used throughout. The natural finish on the strong, lightweight wood provides a warm and modern feel. Optional components include a queen-sized bed, a kitchen with a convection oven, a dry-flush toilet, seating for anywhere from two to eight occupants, and an outdoor shower. Aluminum, nicknamed green metal for its recyclability, is also used in constructing the modular interior structure.
Fully integrated electronics, which can be managed through the Grounded+ app, provide a smart RV experience, giving a detailed view of how much energy each onboard appliance uses and the ability to control all aspects of the vehicle and living space remotely.
Grounded will soon launch the Aerodynamic Towable, a futuristic, spaceship-like trailer. When towing, the roof contracts into aero mode and expands to a 6.5-foot standing height when camping. It will have remote-controlled electronics & appliances powered by 1500 watts of solar. It will also have a Queen-sized bed, bench seating with a pull-out table, a kitchen with a fridge/freezer, sink, induction stove, and a dry-flush toilet.
Grounded manufactures the G1 in Newlab’s Michigan Central Mobility Studio in Detroit. The company has also added an innovative twist to the purchase of a G1. It offers the RV for direct purchase, as an annual lease, or as a monthly subscription model to bring flexibility to those not looking to commit to a full vehicle purchase.
The G1 will be available for purchase in April 2023 and has a published range of 108 miles. The G2, with a range of 250 miles, will be available in July 2023.
The price of the G1 starts at $125,000. For more information, contact Grounded.
