robert van embricqs' unraveling wall hanging transforms into a desk

Decorative yet functional, Robert van Embricqs’ Flow Wall Desk transforms from a geometric piece of art on the wall to a cozy workspace in one swift motion. Initially hung as a flat canvas of slender beams of wood arranged in a simple geometric pattern, the furniture object elegantly unfolds like a spiraling caterpillar to find its functional form.

Its warm textures, durable engineering, and adaptable multifunctional nature put forth a more sustainable standard of design that departs from recent global trends of consumerism and short life span goods. Instead, the minimalist Flow Wall Desk becomes integrated as a permanent fabric of the home’s interior simultaneously through design and furniture.

Dutch designer Robert van Embricqs is best known for his organic wooden furniture objects that create visual and functional transformations in space. His recent piece initially appears as a compact, contemporary wall hanging that doubles as a desk. The transformation from decorative art piece to furniture follows just a single turn around its axis which unravels the flatpack design to reveal a tabletop.

The opened desk’s curving vertical elements emerge from the wall like a caterpillar with the help of discreetly placed brass hinges, which help generate a visual rhythm and optimize its function. The wooden slats curve organically along the sides of the ergonomic desk surface, creating a delicate and dynamic design as well as a screen for privacy for work.
